Goldfish Lifespan

What Is The Goldfish Lifespan?

goldfish lifespan depends on a lot of factors. It can be related to their genetics and also with the environment and how you do as their caretaker. Every type of goldfish has their own average life expectancy. It is safe to say that the common varieties of goldfish can outlive the exotic ones. Most common varieties are expected to live on the average of 10 to 20 years while the exotic ones are only expected to live on the average of 8 to 10 years.
The oldest goldfish that has been recorded by Guinness had the lifespan of 43 years. It was a comet goldfish named Tish. Tish died after having a short illness. It just amazing how Tish was able to break the chains of a goldfish’ expected life span. It also goes to show how dedicated Mrs Hilda Hand was in taking care of Tish.
If you want your goldfish to live as long as Tish, you need to know that one of the main thing to make sure is to keep its tank safe and clean. It is also a fact that a bigger environment can help a goldfish have a healthy life. It is because most small tanks can easily be polluted especially if it is not being cleaned regularly. Most probably your goldfish will die in its own waste products. One thing is sure; goldfish can perform and live longer if they are kept in a happy and spacious aquarium. Goldfish that are raised in the pond are also expected to love twice as long as the ones that are being kept in an aquarium. All you need to is just to make sure that no cats or dogs can get close to them.
Aquarium, ponds or tanks are not the only thing. You also need to make sure that you are able to meet the required amount of water needed for your goldfish to live happy and free. It is said that common goldfish will require at least 20 gallons of water per fish while the exotic or the sensitive ones usually require at least 10 gallons of water per fish to survive. It is also important that you use high quality water and maintain its cleanliness.
Overfeeding is also a factor that can really affect your goldfish lifespan. Even if you loved your goldies too much, you have to understand that you can only give the amount that they need or else you will only put your efforts to waste. It is also important that you clean the unconsumed food that floats in the tank because they are one of the factors can cause pollution and diseases for your goldfish.
And, last of all, you’ve got to be a committed goldfish caretaker. It should be the first thing that you need to answer when you get to pet store and decide to get a goldfish as a pet. You need to understand that even though these creatures are tiny at first, they are not that easy to handle. It will take a lot of commitment to be able to take care of a goldfish.
Goldfish can be tiring to raise but they can give you a very rewarding feeling that is different from all your other pets. It is very rewarding and amazing to know that you are successful in caring a creature so sensitive and so demanding. All your efforts will be paid especially if you will be able to see your fish aged with you.
